How I’m Staying Healthy + Hydrated Week Leading up to the NYC Marathon

,

I’ve put so much work and energy these past 17 weeks into training for the New York Marathon. Now, I’m at the one week marker until race day and I’m focusing on all the little details. My three biggest things I am focusing on are rest, hydration and remaining healthy.

For rest, I have stopped setting those early alarms and allowing my body to wake up naturally and just run a little later than I typically would. My last alarm was for this morning’s final long run of 13 miles that I needed to get in before my son’s 8am soccer game. Besides that, no more running in the dark at 6am. I also am not scheduling any extra outings and play dates. I’m remaining at home more than I typically would.

For hydration + immunity, I’m going to the Hydration Room (a place for IV and injection therapy). I’ve never done IVs outside of when I was at the hospital delivering our babies, but Lance felt confident that this could be a component to help with performance at the marathon. As a mom with three little kids, I feel like I am always operating at a level of depletion/dehydration. I will be the first to admit I’m not the best with drinking water. I, of course, will drastically increase water consumption in these days leading up to race day, but the IV therapies will be an extra boost of hydration for me.

Another huge benefit of going to the Hydration Room is for keeping my immune system strong. This is a rough time of year for colds/flu and with 2 boys going to school, I feel like I’m always dodging the germs they are bringing home. To give my immune system a boost, I went in for my first IV last Friday morning and did the Immune Support IV which includes Vitamin C + D3 + B-Complex + B12 + Zinc + Selenium + Glutathione.

I went to my first appointment this morning and it’s just been a few hours since, but I’m already feeling the positive affects. I feel more energized (despite not the best sleep and a run this morning). And even mentally feel sharper and ready to go. I’m going to go in one more time (the day before we leave for NYC) to ensure I’m extra hydrated leading into a long travel day with our kids (that might be harder than the actual race) and running the 26.2 miles on Sunday.

An extra boost of hydration goes a long way. I was reminded of this as the day progressed and we had a busy afternoon of our kids’ Halloween school events. Typically, after 3pm I’m tapped out and don’t have the energy to deal with multiple outings. I was able to handle the chaos of two Halloween carnivals and I really think the IV earlier in the day helped with this. As a busy mom, I usually turn to an extra cup of caffeine to get me through the day, but maybe the problem is more around dehydration.

If you are getting ready for a race or trying to keep your immune system strong this fall/winter season or just trying to get a little energy boost to deal with the demands of everyday life, you should give the Hydration Room a try! They are giving all my friends/readers of the blog, 50% off their first IV and/or injection at any location for new patients only (excludes memberships, packages, and premium therapies). To get offer, use code: KELLI50. There are locations all over Southern California.

Thank you, Hydration Room for a great experience! The staff was super knowledgeable, attentive and efficient. I was in and out within 30-minutes. I’m feeling even more ready for NYC and to chase down my goals.

Here’s to exactly ONE week until race day!
