NYC Marathon Training: Week 1

Training for the NYC marathon has officially begun!! Training started July 1st. July 1st also happened to be the day we had to urgently rush our son to the ER after having a complication from a tonsillectomy (long story short: he is all good now, but had to have a second surgery to stop the bleeding from one of the scabs falling off). July 1st was a really scary, frantic day for us. I was literally about to hit start on my watch to begin my first run of this training block when the surgeon called me back and H started vomiting blood. Just another example of how training for me needs to be SUPER flexible and definitely not the number one priority. I had to move some things around, but still hit my mileage for the week and got a solid hill workout mid-week. Nothing like steady hill sprints to build strength, endurance and speed.

My goal is to weekly log my training on here to keep track mostly for myself, but if you’re also training for a marathon and a mom with a full schedule, you might find it helpful! Life is crazy right now so going to keep it super brief. Just mileage, workout, and maybe a little story.

Week One

Mileage: 24 miles spread across 4 days

Cross-Training: 1 20-minute peloton ride and 1 30 minute ride.

Workout: 10 x hill repeats, recovering on downhill with jogs- no stopping!

Baby long run: 8 miles

Overall, felt strong. I can tell it’s going to be adjustment as I start building in mileage but I am feeling stronger than I expected, which is a great start. My biggest takeaway from this week is life (and the marathon) will throw me curveballs. How am I going to respond to this pressure? For me, it’s getting in the training regardless. It’s not always going to look pretty. This week it meant doing a peloton ride at 8:30 pm after a day at the hospital. It also meant getting in 2-miles solo and then picking up one kid and pushing 40 pounds in the stroller. Those miles in particular were so slow but I kept telling myself this is the type of non-glamorous stuff that will make the miles in New York surrounded by crowds feel easy.

I am so excited for what is to come in this training block and already can’t wait for November 3rd!
